Gorumara national park
Gorumara National Park is a National Park in northern West Bengal, India. Located in the at the foothills of Eastern Himalaya in Terai region, on the flood plains in Murti, Raidak., it is a medium-sized park with grasslands and forests.The park has been declared as the best among the protected areas in India by the Ministry of Environment and Forests for the year 2009.
Having been a reserve forest since 1895, Gorumara was declared as a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1949, on account of its breeding population of Indian rhinoceros. It was granted official status as an Indian National Park on 31st January, 1994. In 2009 the Indian Ministry of Environment and Forests had declared Gorumara as the best out of all the 180 national parks in India, earmarked it as a model for ideal national park and recommended that others also follow similar practices and standards of forest development and eco tourism.
Gorumara National Park is an important national park of North Bengal. The grassland of Gorumara is famous for the Asiatic one-horned rhino. Out of the wildlife the most common are Asian elephants (huge tuskers), bison, wild boars, barking deer, chital or spotted deer, hog deer and even leopards. The park’s green forests, tall elephant grasses, streams and beautiful landscape provide shelter to several mammals, reptiles, birds and amphibians. Gorumara National Park is also a birders’ paradise. Common birds include scarlet minivet, sunbird, Asian paradise flycatchers, spangled drongo, Indian hornbill, woodpeckers, pheasants etc. In winters, you can see many different migratory birds as well including brahmini ducks, ibis, teals, stork etc.

Jungle safari & Watch tower in Gorumara National Park
The forest safari & watch tower visit is organized in forest authorized jeep meant for the purpose. Tourist must book the safari from the forest department ticket counter in lataguri.
Jatraprasad Watch Tower and Rhino Point :This is the oldest and the most popular Watchtower of Gorumara National Park.. Named after a female elephant that provided long diligent service to the forest department. Jatra Prasad’ Watch Tower is also called as ‘Gorumara Watch Tower’. The two- watch tower offers the excellent view of the forest wilderness, the salt licks located below the tower by the river side attract a lot of wild animals which can be easily seen from the tower. Jatraprasad Watch Tower is the most popular place among the visiting tourists. This is the oldest and the most popular Watch Tower. Rhino Point is another watchtower located close to Jatraprasad and is covered in the same trip.
Medla Watch Tower : located at Kalipur eco-village near Ramsai on the eastern fringe of Gorumara National Park. Here you can take a buffalo cart ride to travel up to the tower. Along the river banks and across on the grassy land you can sight wildlife such as elephants, rhinos, bisons, deers, and various kinds of birds including peacocks.
Chukchuki Watchtower: :If you are bird lover then you must visit this watch tower. It is a paradise for bird lovers. This tower is the perfect place for viewing and photographing hundreds of birds. This paradise is situated on the extreme border of the Gorumara National Park between Ramsai village within Gorumara and Lataguri.
Chandrachur Watch Tower:This watch tower also known as Khunia Watch Tower. This tower offers the best views of wilderness and dense forest. There are a small pond and a salt leak in front of the watch tower . Guest can view different wild animal from this watch tower. Sighting chance from this watch tower is very high.
Gorumara forest jeep Safari :Apart from watchtower visits Gorumara National Park Jungle Safari (Jeep safari) is also very popular among tourist. However no watchtower is covered in this safari. It takes you around various parts of the forest to spot wildlife. The entry to the forest for jeep safari is at Lataguri . The Jeep Safari moves through dense jungle and you will come across several villages along the way which are nestled in the national park.
Where to stay in Gorumara
There is plenty of options available to the guest. There are a few hundred private accommodations on all sides of the National Park. Guest can either choose to stay in Government Forest Bungalow or they can opt to stay in private hotels and resort which are located in Murti area or at Lataguri. There is also very nice home stay available .
Best Time to visit Gorumara national park
Gorumara Forest remains closed from 15th June to 15th september, the best time to visit the park is during the winter time between November to March. But wildlife sighting chances is very high during summer, possibility is best early in the mornings and just before dusk when animals come out to the water bodies or river banks to drink water.
How to Reach Gorumara national park
Gorumara is well connect by road. It can be reached from Bagdogra / NJP in just two hours through winding roads and tea gardens.
By Air – The nearest airport is at Bagdogra. It is a domestic airport. All major air services are available from all over India. Airport is about 80 km away from Gorumara Natinal Park. You can find out various vehicles to reach at Gorumara from the airport.
By Road: NH31 between Siliguri and Guwahati passes over Lataguri, Chalsa, and Nagrakata near the park. Private Buses & cars, NBSTC buses are available from Siliguri to Lataguri which takes about 2 hrs from Siliguri. Tenzing Norgay Bus Terminus (Siliguri) is 74 kms away from Gorumara.
There is 4 nearest railway station from where one can enter gorumara.
Chalsa: The nearest railway station is at Chalsa which is about 14 km driving distance, though very few long distance train has stoppage here . Mostly local train has stoppage here.
New Mal : Distance from gorumara to new mal junction railway station is only 24 Km and most long distance train has stoppage here. Most of the guest enter dooars through this point.
New Moinaguri:. Another nearest railway station , some long distance mail express train ahs stoppage here . Distance is around 26 Km from gorumara.
NJP : This Station are the main railway stations in this area. NJp Station is well connected with rest of the country . From NJP tourists can rent private jeeps or car by road through National Highway 31 to Lataguri, the gateway to the park.
